QES Identification and Mobile ID App

General

A verified identity is required for the qualified electronic signature (QES).

For all other signature levels — such as the simple electronic signature (SES) or the advanced electronic signature (AES) — no personal identification is necessary.

Requirements

  • A valid identity document (passport or identity card)
  • A smartphone with the Mobile ID App
  • An active mobile phone number

1. Install and Activate the Mobile ID App

The Mobile ID App serves as a secure second factor for the QES and fulfils the legal requirement to grant consent to the QES under the signer's sole control.

Installing the Mobile ID App is straightforward. Open your App Store or Google Play Store and search for "Mobile ID". The logo looks as follows:

Install the app and follow the instructions to activate it.

☝️ Important — When Changing Your Phone or Provider

Write down the recovery code (displayed at the end of the setup) and store it in a safe place. You will need this code if you change your phone or mobile provider.

If you can no longer find your recovery code, you can generate a new one at any time via the Mobile ID website. Log in with your mobile number and select "Generate recovery code" on the right side of the dashboard.

If your Mobile ID App shows an existing account after a phone change, delete it and set it up again using the recovery code. This must be done before the next signature.

2. Identification Process

The identification process for the QES involves several steps to ensure your identity is confirmed beyond doubt.

Our accredited certification service provider, Swisscom Trust Services (STS), offers several options:

  • Free identification at a certified Swisscom Shop in Switzerland
  • Paid methods such as:
    • Selfie, auto and video identification
    • Bank-Ident procedure for Germany
    • Use of the new German identity card (PIN must be known)

For further information, visit the Smart Registration Services by Swisscom Trust Services.

For paid methods, remote identification covers only one legal jurisdiction at a time. This is because Swiss and EU qualified electronic signatures are not mutually recognised.

With the exception of face-to-face identification at a legitimised RA agency (e.g. certified Swisscom Shop, axelity ag), where physical presence is required, each of the above methods covers only one jurisdiction. This means that if you wish to sign under both Swiss and EU/EEA law and prefer online identification, you will need to complete two separate identification processes.

👉 Note

After completing the identification, please do not forget to accept the terms of use of Swisscom Trust Services. You will receive an SMS with a link after the identification is complete. Follow this link, tick the checkboxes and tap the "Submit" button at the bottom. Then confirm the request you receive via a push notification in the Mobile ID App.
